Security System Basics

A security system consists of a control panel which functions as a central computer, receiving messages from a number of sensors that act as the "eyes" and "ears" of the system. Keypads, located near common entry doors allow you to control the system. If the system is "armed" and a signal is received by the panel, it automatically dials a Central Monitoring Station via a built-in telephone communicator. The station operator then alerts the appropriate authorities, as well as a responsible party such as you at work, a relative or caretaker or anyone else that you may wish to have notified.

A basic security system is divided into two general areas. Because most break-ins are attempted thru a door, the perimeter, or first layer of protection most commonly consists of installing contact switches on the exterior doors of the structure to be protected. Windows may also be switched if desired, but in a large home or business, it may not be cost-effective to do so.

The interior, or second layer of protection consists of some type of interior trap. Many different methods are available to detect entry into the interior of a structure. Some of the more common methods include motion detectors, audio glass break detectors and floor stress sensors. The method to use depends upon the layout of the structure, your lifestyle/use of the building (pets, children, if the system will be used while the building is occupied, etc.), and, of course, your budget.

A system may also include:

Panic switches that can be manually operated
Smoke detectors in each bedroom & on each level
Heat detectors in attics, garages & kitchens
Remote controls to arm/disarm the system, activate panic alarms, & turn on lights or open doors
Telephone access to the system to allow you to arm, disarm, check system status or control devices within the building using any TouchTone telephone in the world.

We have the experience and the knowledge to tailor a system to your needs, whether you need a basic system for your new or existing home, a more elaborate system that integrates security, fire alarm and automation features, or a complex commercial system that is partitioned for different sections of the building and arms itself automatically!
